Date: 12th July 2025
Speaker: Dr. G. Mohana Charyulu
Designation: Professor, Department of English, Vignan University, Guntur
Topic: Translating Indian Languages: Challenges and Contexts
A guest lecture was delivered by Dr. G. Mohana Charyulu on the topic “Translating Indian Languages: Challenges and Contexts.” In his engaging session, Dr. Charyulu shed light on the complexities involved in translating Indian languages, particularly into global languages like English.
He began by emphasizing India’s vast linguistic diversity, noting that while this richness makes translation essential, it also introduces unique challenges. He explained how factors such as caste, religion, and gender influence not only the original texts but also their translations. Understanding these social elements, he argued, is critical to producing meaningful and accurate translations.
Dr. Charyulu further discussed the cultural and linguistic barriers that translators face—such as translating idioms, culturally rooted narratives, and words that have no direct equivalents in other languages. He highlighted that translation is more than converting words; it is a process of cultural bridging that requires sensitivity, creativity, and an awareness of the target audience’s context.
He also touched upon the ethical responsibilities of translators, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the original text while ensuring it is accessible and comprehensible to new readers. Dr. Charyulu encouraged students and researchers to engage in translation work with both scholarly knowledge and emotional insight.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students actively participated by asking questions and sharing their reflections.
